So what is a Mosaic?

In ancient Rome mosaic artwork was found everywhere but the most common use of mosaic artwork was mosaic floors.  The mosaic floors had a base layer of straw or wood. Then the craftsman would  lay down mortar which is like cement. The next step would be to draw the picture or design on the mortar.  The craftsman then placed tiny pieces of glass, stones, or ceramic to form the design or picture. The tiny pieces of material used were called tesserae.

What is Alban Day?

Alban Day takes place on Saturday 22 June, delivered jointly by St Albans City and District Council and St Albans Cathedral, sponsored by St Albans BID. It combines the pageantry of the Pilgrimage procession with the vibrant Alban Festival, set against the backdrop of the traditional Charter Market, which takes place every Wednesday and Saturday from 8.30 am on St Peter’s Street and Market Place, St Albans.

Witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of 12ft puppets weaving through the streets, retelling the story of St Alban – from whom the City gets its name. The procession begins at St Peter’s Church at 11am, and its magnificent journey will take it down St Peter’s Street and onto the High Street, culminating with an eye-popping spectacle at the West End of the Cathedral.

After the procession has gone through High Street, activities and entertainment will take place at the Clock Tower between 12pm and 5pm and include performances from St Albans Morris, Brassbound, Elizabeth and Jameson, OVO Theatre Company and others. There’ll also be face-painting, arts and crafts and figures from St Albans history to talk to! Windrush Day celebrations will also be taking place outside The Vintry Gardens on Waxhouse Gate. There will be music and dominoes for you to enjoy on your way to the Abbey Orchard, where there will be additional activities taking place.

Services that form part of the Pilgrimage will be taking place in the Cathedral.

The entertainment schedule for the Clock Tower is as follows:

12pm – Elizabeth and Jameson
1pm – OVO Theatre
1.40pm – St Albans Morris
2.15pm – Conor Walker
3pm – Mark Anthony
3.30pm – St Albans Morris
4pm – Brassbound
